Desensitization to violence

NEW YORK -- 25 April 2010 -- A homeless man in New York trying to be a Good Samaritan became a victim himself last Sunday.

In video obtained by newyorkpost.com, several people are seen walking past the man as he lay dying on the street not stopping to help or check on the victim.

Police say 31-year-old Hugo Alfredo Tale-Yax ended up being stabbed numerous times in the chest after he came to the aid of a woman the suspect was assaulting.

"That morning, I heard a lady frantically screaming. I don't know exactly what she was screaming. It sounded like ‘help’ or ‘oh my God.’ But I was half-sleep. And the next thing I know, I wake up in the morning, around 9 or 10 a.m. and I saw a bunch of cop cars and things like that, yellow tape around the building. And I heard somebody got murdered,” said resident Corry Scott.

Before police arrived or apparently were even called, security camera video from the building shows a number of people walking past the man lying on the sidewalk as he bleeds to death. A couple of men even stop and stare.

After more than an hour, someone dials 911.

"If I saw someone lying there bleeding, I would have definitely called for help. I don't understand how you can just walk past somebody and see them laying there and needed help and just continue to walk by. That's crazy,” Scott said.

Police still don't have any suspects in the woman's attack or the man's murder.

Family members say Tale-Yax was an immigrant from Guatemala who had just recently lost his job and his home.

His body will be sent back to Guatemala next week for burial.
