Walking What a nice way to cross the strait and enjoy the view! There are protected pedestrian sidewalks on both the West and East side of the Bridge. These can be accessed through staircases on both the Rion and the Antirion coast or from parking areas near the toll plaza. For your safety, it is not allowed to cross the Bridge or the toll plaza area on foot, nor to walk along traffic areas. When at the toll plaza area please use the overhead footbridge. In case of accessibility difficulty, please ask the personnel for assistance. Hitch-hiking, like any other form of vehicle parking or stopping, is prohibited along the Bridge. If in any difficulty while walking please use the emergency phones in the areas of the pylons (every 560m) in order to contact the personnel for assistance. Please, make sure that children do not climb on parapets, safety guardrail or cables anchorage: they may fall and harm themselves. High Winds and Bad Weather
The Rion-Antirion Strait is a particular area as regards meteorological conditions. Especially in the autumn and winter, it is not uncommon to have strong winds, even on days when the nearby towns of
Patras and Nafpaktos may seem relatively unaffected! Driving behavior should always be adjusted to the prevailing weather conditions. Please lower your speeds and avoid unnecessary lane-changing, braking or acceleration during adverse weather. Keep a safe distance with the leading vehicle. Please pay due attention to the warnings on the variable-message signs, as well as to the instructions of the Police. In cases of wind speed exceeding 80 km/h, the Police may enforce restrictions to certain sensitive vehicles – such as motorbikes and high-sided, empty trucks. |
