Windows Media Format 9 Series Runtime
WMFDist.exe is a file of Windows Media Format including Windows Media Video and Audio. The WMFDist.exe file contains Windows Media Format 9 Series Runtime files by Microsoft.
Installation is required for supporting Live View recording (.ASF format*
) in AXIS Media Control.
Installing Windows Media Format Runtime
Windows Media Format Runtime (WMFR) is used to create a high-definition Windows Media Video files. This is the file format AMC uses to store recorded video. If WMFR is not already installed on your computer when you install AMC, you will be prompted to install it.
Note: WMFR is included in Windows XP SP2, and will automatically be installed when you download and install XP SP2.
You can wait to install WMFR, but you cannot record video using AMC until it is installed.
*Advanced Systems Format (ASF) Specification The Advanced Systems Format (ASF) is the file format used by Windows Media. Audio and/or Video content compressed with a
wide variety of codecs can be stored in an ASF file and played back with the Windows Media Player (provided the appropriate
codecs are installed), streamed with Windows Media Services or optionally packaged with Windows Media Rights Manager.
ASF is an extensible file format designed to store synchronized multimedia data. It supports data delivery over a wide variety of
networks and protocols while still proving suitable for local playback. ASF supports advanced multimedia capabilities including
extensible media types, component download, scaleable media types, author-specified stream prioritization, multiple language
support, and extensive bibliographic capabilities, including document and content management.
Robust File Container
The Advanced Systems Format file container stores the following in one file: audio, multi-bit-rate video, metadata (such as the
file's title and author), and index and script commands (such as URLs and closed captioning). The file container supports files as
large as 17 million terabytes.
To ensure that content is associated with compatible players, there are several different file extensions. The file extension used
should be:
.WMA for files that include audio compressed with the Windows Media Audio codec, or
.WMV for files that include both audio and video compressed with Windows Media Audio and Windows Media Video codecs.
Content compressed with other codecs should be stored in file and use the .ASF extension.
By using separate extensions, users can install multiple players on their system some which may play only audio, and associate
with the .WMA extension, and different players that play both audio and video, and associate with the .WMV extension.

FAQ AXIS Media Control components shown as not installed
Question
After installing Windows Security Update (KB 896688) one of the following issues appear when installing/running AXIS Media Control components:
(1). Audio Component is shown as not installed when viewing Motion JPEG, audio controls and audio are missing. The following message appears:
AudioComponent which enables streaming audio in Microsoft Internet Explorer, has not been installed or could not be registered on this computer. To install or upgrade the AudioComponent, you must have Administration rights on this computer and you must answer Yes when asked if you wish to allow the installation. AXIS

(2). MPEG-4 streaming is working but MPEG-4 components are shown as not installed. The following message appears:

To install or upgrade the MPEG-4 Decoder, you must have Administration rights on this computer and you must answer Yes when asked if you wish to allow the installation. AXIS

How do I avoid displayed installation tags?
Answer
To avoid the displayed installation tags some modifications in the Internet Explorer Security settings have to be made.
(1). You can add your Axis device as a trusted site;
Open Tools > Internet Options > Security > Trusted Sites
Press "Sites..." button
Add the Axis device's IP-address (wildcards can be used to add subnets). (This is called a "trusted device" in the text below )
Note!
When running AMC against a trusted device the components will be installed and used correctly. This is true even if you connect to a non-trusted device, as long as the first connection was made to a trusted one.
However, if you restart Internet Explorer and first run against a non-trusted, non-local Axis device the error will occur even when you direct your browser against a trusted device.

(2). You can add your Axis device as a local site:
Open Tools >Internet Options > Security > Local Intranet > Sites
Press "Advanced..." and add camera's IP as a local site (wildcards can be used to add subnets, for example 10.93.*.*).
or
(3). If you are using a proxy you can bypass proxy for specified local addresses under Tools>Internet Options>Connections>LAN Settings>Bypass Proxy for local addresses (specify those under Advanced)
After changes restart the Internet Explorer and check the results.
