The largest telescope in the SE Europe is at the mountain Helmos, near the Ski Centre of Kalavryta. It was named “Aristarhos" after Aristarchos of Samos, mathematician-astronomer, who was the first to argue about heliocentrism. "Aristarchos" was officially set to work a few days ago and will be used for research in Astrophysics and for the observation of celestial bodies. The primary mirror diameter is 2.3m and the final focal ration f/8. The Helmos Observatory is located in the North Peloponnesus on the mount Helmos (Aroania) at an altitude of 2340 m (22˚ 11' 46" East, 37˚ 59' 04" North). This astronomical station is 130 km (straight line distance) westward of Athens and about 15 km for the historic city of Kalavrita. The location of the site (Neraidorachi or Fairy Slope) was selected after careful examination and finally given the green light in March 1999. Being actually one of the darkest areas both in Greece and in Europe, it thus facilitates astronomical observation away from the light polluting sources. |
